Communal tables, no written menu, no printed bill — the waiter tells you what's good and tells you what you owe. A Belmont institution since 1962 and the most Bronx dinner on the avenue.

Family-run Oaxacan kitchen in Mott Haven with some of the city's most serious moles, five minutes from the 6 train. Activist-owned, community-rooted, and cooking at a level that embarrasses fancier rooms.
Order: Enchiladas with mole Oaxaqueño — or ask which of the moles came off the stove that morning. Bring cash.

La Piraña Lechonera
Angel Jimenez — machete in hand — carves whole roast pig from a converted trailer in a Mott Haven lot, weekends only, like he has for decades. The closest thing NYC has to a Puerto Rican lechonera on the island.
Order: Lechon with crispy cuerito (skin), arroz con gandules, and whatever salad Angel insists you try.
